New city, new traditions

I have been in Austin for 3 years now (crazy to think it's been that long!) and I am not going to lie, it was a bit of a culture shock at first. In Miami I was surrounded by my Colombian traditions, friends and food, so coming to Texas was like going to a completely different world. At my job, most of the people, at the time, were Mexicans. There are not a whole lot of Mexicans in Miami and honestly my relationship with the Mexican culture was very limited, to pretty much the awesome tacos you can find in Calle Ocho in Miami.

Having my new coworkers opened up a whole new world for me, I was not only getting to meet Texas and it's traditions but also Mexico, it's people and it's traditions. I have always been a fan of trying new things and experiencing new cultures so I embraced the change.

One of the traditions that I was introduced to was; Las Posadas. In Colombia we have something similar but it's called novenas. It is a similar religious tradition but different prayers and food. So, in a nutshell Las Posadas are the Mexican recreation of Mary and Joseph looking for a lace to stay the night that Mary was in labor. They separate the group into two groups, one stays outside and the other one is inside the house. They sing a song back and forth that resembles Joseph asking for a place to stay while the "house owners" reply. After a short back and forth, they let the outside group in and the party starts with warm ponche.

My coworkers had the tradition to make one big posada in December and so I have been part of it for the past 3 years. I love that it has become a yearly thing that we all look forward to regardless of our country of origin. We all do a pot luck and bring food from every country and that is probably my favorite thing, the blending of cultures and food into one celebration and the fact that my coworkers want to keep their traditions even from far away. 

I got to partner up with HERDEZ a brand that has awesome traditional Mexican foods to share my posada experience this year! So since I am not a huge fan of cooking, I brought some chips and this yummy salsa to share at our pot luck.

Ya llevo 3 años en Austin (¡que loco pensar que ha pasado tanto tiempo!) y no voy a negar que fue un shock cultural cuando llegue. En Miami estaba rodeada de muchas de las tradiciones Colombianas, mis amigos la mayoría Colombianos, y bueno los 1000 restaurantes Colombianos. Así que llegar a Texas fue como llegar a un mundo completamente diferente. Cuando empece en mi trabajo, la mayoría de mis compañeros eran Mexicanos. En Miami realmente no hay muchos Mexicanos y honestamente no estaba tan expuesta a la cultura Mexicana mas allá de los tacos increíbles que venden en la Calle Ocho.

Conocer a tantos Mexicanos abrió un mundo nuevo para mi. No solamente estaba conociendo Texas y sus tradiciones pero también Mexico. Afortunadamente siempre he sido fan de conocer nuevas culturas e intentar nuevas cosas, así que el cambio fue increíble.

Una de las tradiciones Mexicanas son Las Posadas. En Colombia tenemos algo medio parecido pero se llaman las Novenas pero son con oraciones y comida diferentes. Las Posadas son reuniones familiares y con amigos en donde se recrean cuando Maria y Jose estaban buscando posada la noche que Maria dio a luz. Todos se dividen en 2 grupos, unos adentro y los otros afuera y cantan una canción. Al final los de adentro dejan entrar a los otros y comienza la fiesta con el famoso ponche típico.



Mis compañeros de trabajo tienen esta tradición de hacer una Posada que se vuelve en una fiesta muy grande. Ya llevo 3 años siendo parte de esta linda tradición. Lo que más me gusta es que todos somos parte de la celebración sin importar de donde somos y el hecho que ellos estando lejos de su país quieren mantener viva la tradición. Cada persona lleva un plato para compartir, y las culturas se mezclan, haciéndose un ambiento bastante interesante. 

Tuve la oportunidad de ser parte de la campaña de HERDEZ una marca que tiene diferentes comidas mexicanas y la venden aca en USA. Yo no soy una gran fan de cocinar, as que decidí llevar la salsa roja y verde de HERDEZ con chips para compartir en la posada.
