Debunking the Laser Hair Removal Myths

Photography by: Angel Torres

The first time I had laser hair removal was from what I thought one of the most respected clinics, turned out to be a total scam. Maybe you have heard about American Laser Center and how they ripped off thousands of people with treatments they paid in advance. Thankfully I was "done" with my treatment but I was never happy with the results and well needless to say the "life time touch ups" they promised were not going to happen.

I am Latina, and my hair is pretty dark and I am quite hairy. Shaving every other day is becoming way too much and a little tedious to be honest. Not to mention that I also suffer from ingrown hairs. So the whole, nice and smooth legs it has never really been true for me. The first time I attempted laser hair removal was for my underarms and my upper lip. The under arm was pretty good and I have to barely shave once in a while but my upper lip was the biggest waste of money, literally didn't budge. So I gave up and went back to regular shaving after a couple thousand dollars later. Yep, you red that right thousands. Until I discovered Pure Lux Med Spa.

So, I guess that brings us to our first myth: Laser Hair Removal does not need to cost thousands of dollars to be good. I am SO happy to have met Vanessa from Pure Lux in Edina, MN. She taught me SO MUCH about what a real laser should and should not be. Pure Lux doesn't charge per treatment package but rather by sessions so it makes it (in my eyes) a lot more affordable. The session's average is $89 for a grade 4 laser, the highest strength possible. I've only had one session so far and the difference is HUGE.

The second myth is; you can get laser hair removal anywhere. FALSE! I mean yes you can but that it is safe and good? not so much. This is your skin and you should see it as an investment and not as a thing to bargain on. Vanessa has over 9 years of experience, specially with darker skin types (lucky me! you can't tell on the photos because right now I am white as a ghost but I do have an olive undertone) Remember; cheap doesn't mean better and with such reasonable prices like the ones Pure Lux offers, why take the gamble?

Third and most interesting myth is; laser works on all kinds of skin. True, BUT it works faster and better on people that have darker hair because the laser pick it up easier. So if you are blonde or even ginger chances are it will take a few more sessions for you to see results. It takes an average of 6-8 sessions, with Elite laser (the one Pure Lux has) but you can start noticing results right away, almost instantly! My skin became softer, lighter and a lot less hair.

Last but not least; laser hair removal doesn't hurt. It truly depends on your pain tolerance, I thought I had a pretty good one but this laser did hurt, not terribly but more like a rubber band hitting your skin repeatedly. But what I really loved about Pure Lux is that they have a special machine that blows cold air on the exact spot that they are treating to keep you as comfortable as possible. Also, the redness it's pretty minimal so you can do you session on your lunch-break and go right back to work. The other amazing thing is that they have a touch-less laser and I really loved that! specially when you want to get treatments in more intimate places, plus to me seems more hygienic.

Laser Hair removal can be a huge help when done properly and in the hands of an expert. Do your research about the procedure, the place and the person where you intent to do it so that you don't regret it later!

  1. Hey There! Great post! My question to you would be how you can tell a good place from a bad one without having to spend the money? I see that Pure Lux was good for you but are there others? What are the big differences you can see that make one better than another? It's something I want to revisit but like you said it's not cheap and I can't afford to waste money on something that really doesn't work.

    Thanks in advance!

    1. Hello, PURE LUX HERE

I think the best way to find out is by researching the type of technology used for laser hair removal. At PURE LUX, we shy away from IPL or BBL lasers (Intense Pulse Light/Broad Band Light) We use a grade 4 laser, which is the highest classification strength laser. Also, we do not sell in packages making it easier on the checkbook. Our goal is to prove to you that you will get results without locking you into a package and holding you hostage.

Another big factor is the experience of the technician. While you can have an amazing laser, technician experience is key. Vanessa has 10 years of experience and knows how to utilize the full capacity to maintain a safe and effective treatment.

PURE LUX does offer free consultations and would love to have you come in to talk further about your hair free journey. If you are not local to Minnesota, feel free to give us a call and we can chat more about your personal needs and help make a good connection for you.

      Take care,

      PURE LUX - 952-460-0160

  10. it really depends on different persons skin reaction to the laser hair removal procedure. some of them having skin sensitive condition as well as a result of that. Unlike wet and dry epilator for hair removal that is more acceptable by many ladies.
