Why I don't regret my long distance relationship and would do it all over again

I’m not going to lie, the past three years have been HARD (to say the least),  but now that it’s almost over and I can see the light at the end of the tunnel I have been reflecting on all the things we gained as a couple and as individuals during this time.

1. You find yourselves. Prior to the distance, we had been together for so long and had just lived together for a year, the lines between where he ended and I began, became blurred.  . While the process was painful, this forced time apart gave us a chance of a lifetime. We discovered what we truly like, what we missed doing together, and what we enjoyed doing separately.

2. You become a GENIUS at packing. Trust me, after flying every month for three years, I know what I need and when I need it.

3. Every reunion is like a mini vacation.. For the most part, Angel and I were both off from work when he or I visited, so it felt like a holiday! Plus, depending on who is visiting whom, you get to make the plans and do things that you may not generally get to do.

4. You become a compulsive planner. I am already one, but this experience just made it worse (or better, depending on how you look at it). Since we don’t get too much time together and I want to do it ALL, planning is key. One thing I have struggled with is that sometimes things when don’t go as planned, it is important to try to go with the flow, which I am still working on.

5. Sleeping in awkward places and awkward positions are your forte. I can pretty much sleep anywhere as it is, but I became really good at sleeping in planes. I recently bought the master of plane pillows… Best. Investment. Ever.

6. You begin to realize what makes you happy and what doesn’t. While relationships are all about commitment and making compromise. Sometimes arguments and fighting can be affected by doing something you don’t necessarily want to do, and vice versa.  I recommend taking  responsibility for your own happiness and holding yourself accountable. If something doesn’t make you happy, let them know!

7. You don’t need to shave as much. Not gonna lie, one of my faves.

8. You become a master at airport security, times, airlines and sales. From knowing how to dress to get thru security in less than a minute to knowing when to book your flights for the best deals. You will become a master.

9. Technology becomes your best and worst friend. When it wants to work it’s fantastic, and many apps make this journey easier. However, when technology fails, it can be an even larger inconvenience, more than likely it will be a fight.

10. Going to bed on your own time. Being with that other person is awesome, but you know what’s also pretty awesome? Going to bed at whatever time you want without bothering anyone else. Oh, and the added perk of  having the bed all to yourself.

11. Trust becomes key. Trust is important in any  relationship, of course, but if you don’t trust a person that is miles apart from you, what in the world are you doing?

12. Two words: Reunion. Sex.

13. Hellos become meaningful. The goodbyes are awful and you pretty much feel like you are going to die, but those hellos, the butterflies, the nervousness – they are one of a kind!

These three years have taught me the biggest lesson of my life and I have embraced every step. I know they made us better people and it truly proves that if we made it through three years of this, we can make it through anything.

Finally, after all this time, we are officially closing the distance and  will be together again at the end of March. YAY!

1. Aprendes a encontrarte a ti mismo.

¡YAY!

    1. I had a long distance relationship once and it didn't work out. It was a combination of the things you mentioned that made me want to move on! Finding yourself, not shaving, but it was ultimately the lack of trust that ended it. Both myself and her. All in all we tried and everything you said was spot on! I don't regret it either!
