The importance of spending time together

As we approach the holidays, I thought it would be a good time to talk about getaways and the importance of having them in a long distance relationship. As you all know, my fiancé and I have been doing this for three years, and we have found out that getaways truly bring us together and give us the special moments that we miss simply because we are not together every day.

We took on a nice tradition once we became long distance: to have our getaways on our birthdays (our birthdays are back-to-back  the same week in May) so we have a birthday week. If you can find a time in the year that is meaningful for you both to do this, I encourage you to do so. In my experience, it’s so much more meaningful (not that it’s not already). Also, go somewhere you both have never been. This will create new memories for both of you and own little space in time.

The first year, we went to the US Virgin Islands. They are unbelievable! We stayed at the Marriot ‘s Frenchman’s Cove resort since his parents have a timeshare. The resort has amazing views with a private beach (what more can you ask for?!). The only downside is their restaurant. I just wish it was a bit more interesting and had more variety.  The food was too traditional and bland for my taste.

If you ever go there, I would not recommend renting a car. In St. Thomas, they drive on the opposite side of the road and coming from the US, this adjustment  is no easy task. Flights from Miami are not too expensive and JetBlue has some nice deals from time to time.

Our second year, we headed over to Orlando, FL and road tripped from Miami. Road trips are  a great option  and can be much more economical. This time around our getaway included my in-laws! Believe it or not, this was my first family vacation with them, so it was interesting, to say the least. Also, this was the getaway where he proposed! I truly had no clue and he played it off very well. For lodging, we stayed at the Sheraton Vistana Resort next to the theme parks so that we had easy access to them. The hotel was just ok. They have nice amenities, but the rooms need to be updated! It worked out, however, since we didn’t spend much time at the room anyway.

This year, we went to Puerto Rico! I have always been infatuated with this island. Something about it just pulls me to it. It took a lot of convincing to take him there, but as soon as we landed he was happy. We stayed at this cute little boutique hotel in Old San Juan called Chateau Cervantes and explored the city for the first three days. We stumbled upon the best bar in Old San Juan called La Factoría. If you are ever in San Juan, please do yourself a favor and stop by and have a lavender Moscow mule or an Old Fashioned; they are simply THE BEST. The next three days we spent at Vieques, a tiny little island next to Puerto Rico. Let me start by saying that there is no cell reception (or very limited), so it is HEAVEN! Plus, you can see wild horses roaming around the island. The beaches are just beautiful and they are plentiful! I also recommend renting a car or a Jeep. It is not as expensive and it makes moving around much easier since walking is not really an option. We stayed at another tiny (tiny) bed and breakfast called Villa Coral Guesthouse near the malecón where all the restaurants and bars are. A must-do at this island is a visit to the Bioluminescent Bay. It is an unbelievable natural phenomenon that you just have to witness.

So there you have it: three years and three getaways later. We enjoy our little getaways and it has become a tradition for us. It is one of the fuels that have kept us together. When you visit each other at your respective cities, it is nice, but there is a sense of ownership from one person or the other. When you go to a totally new place together, it almost feels like it’s your special place… and trust me they do become into unforgettable places.

  1. What a fun post! I can't imagine being so far away from my love for almost three years. We recently made a move to Panama for three months and it was absolutely wonderful and terrible at the same time....in the end it has greatly strengthened our bond.

  3. What a beautiful post. Long distance can be so tough, but I think it can have an amazing effect on a relationship. I know after our time being long distance we know each other better, we listen better, we communicate better. Good luck!
