A Broke Girls’ Guide to Cheap Flights

This week I have been scrambling between a very tough time at work, moving offices, wedding planning  and finding time to book my next flight to Miami, but here we are.  I finally found an inexpensive flight and in the process, I realized that I have a few tips to share!

When I started this long-distance-relationship journey a couple of years back I never really thought that I would spend SO MUCH money on travel, but voilà! Fast forward to present time and a couple thousand dollars later, I have learned a bit – or a lot. My credit coming out of Miami was awful, to say the least, so getting a rewards credit card was not an option.  Expensive flights weren’t an option either, so I sought out to find the best website to look for cheap flights.

I started off with Hotwire. The biggest perk of this site is that you can set a “notify me” alert when the price drops with your origin city, destination and travel dates. This is great when prices drop, but sometimes they went up and Iended up paying too much for a ticket that was supposed to be “cheap”. One day I stumbled upon Google Flights; it was like a miracle! It searched all of the major airlines and even JetBlue (which is one of my favorite airlines, but not necessarily the cheapest). It was quite a revelation, and it’s worth mentioning that they utilize a simple and user-friendly platform. The site is to the point: no ads, no clutter. Search to price in just two simple steps. It is still my first go-to site first, if I can’t find a good price here, then I jump to Southwest.

Southwest has an amazing (and I mean AH-MAZING!) rewards program called Rapid Rewards. I opened it as soon as I got to Austin and in two years I have earned a couple of free flights. Not only do they have plenty of flights to Ft. Lauderdale, which is a commodity in this town with an airport the size of a Polly Pocket, but they have great prices! So let’s say that I booked a couple of trips to Ft. Lauderdale that each rewarded me 700 points for each fare; that is 1,400 per trip. After five trips, you get to fly for free at least one-way. An average flight “costs” about 30,000 points on other programs, on Southwest you can get round-trip for as low as 14,000 point. I also signed up to their Rapid Rewards Dining program, which acquires points for every dollar you spend eating out at a list of participating restaurants in the city of your choice. The dining program is linked to the Rapid Rewards, unfortunately it requires that every debit/credit card that you use has to be manually added to the account. On the bright side, you only have to do it once. After each dining experience, you get an email asking for feedback and you get extra points just for filling it out. It doesn’t seem that much but, trust me, they do add up.

Recently, I was able to get a Capital One Venture card, which has a better miles rewards program than other credit cards. I’ll update you on how it compares once I’ve tried it out for a few months.  

Another great strategy I recently discover is to book two one-way tickets separately. Sometimes it is cheaper. Have you heard of that myth that tickets are cheaper on Tuesday nights? Not necessarily true all the time, but for the most part is a great time to book, so it doesn’t hurt to look. Last week I missed out on a fare $40 cheaper and boy was I pissed, just for not following my gut and me wanting to see if one more day would mean less money. 

Last but not least, you know when flights are overbooked and they offer vouchers? If your schedule is flexible, take it! But only take it if it’s over $300, some airlines slack a lot and only give $150. However, if you have the time to get to your destination on a later time, go for it, it’s free money after all. I can never take it because I always leave after work (7:00pm-ish) and arrive right before work (10:00am-ish) so that is just not an option for me. Also, when a plane has a delay for mechanical reasons, ALWAYS ask for compensation. Last time Southwest gave me a $300 voucher, so when my fiancé came here last week it was free. But if you don’t ask they won’t give it to you!

So there you have it: Some quick tips to score a cheap flight without having an amazing rewards credit card.

Estas ultimas semanas he estado saltando de un lado a otro. Desde drama en el trabajo, mudanza de oficina, empezando los preparativos para la boda y encontrar tiempo para poder comprar mi pasaje a Miami para Septiembre. Pero bueno, por fin logre hacer todo y tengo tiempo de escribir este post. En el proceso de encontrar el pasaje mas barato, me di cuenta que se un par de tips que les quiero compartir para encontrar un pasaje un poco mas económico.

Cuando empecé esto de larga distancia hace un par de años atrás nunca me imagine que me fuera a gastar TANTO dinero en pasajes pero bueno después de 2 años y 8 meses viajando cada mes y muchos, muchísimos miles de dólares después he aprendido un par de truquitos. Cuando me fui de Miami mi crédito estaba por el piso así que tener una tarjeta de crédito con un programa de millas, realmente no era posible. Los pasajes de Austin a Miami no son caros pero tampoco son baratos y a $300 cada viaje va sumando, así que empecé a buscar el mejor website.

El primero fue Hotwire. Uno de los puntos a favor es que tiene un botón de “notify me” cuando lo precios de un pasaje especifico bajan. Es una buena herramienta si es que en realidad bajan los precios. Sino, te toca pagar aun más de lo que viste en un principio. Un día alguien me dijo de Google Flights, fue como un milagro! Esta pagina busca en todas las aerolíneas principales y también en aerolineas un poco mas pequeñas como JetBlue (que es una de mis aerolíneas favoritas pero no necesariamente la mas barata). Realmente fue un alivio encontrarme con una pagina así, con un diseño súper simple y user-friendly… es una pagina que va al punto: sin ads, sin extras. Solo poner la ciudad de origen, la ciudad de destino, fechas y voilà! Siempre reviso esta pagina primero y si no encuentro nada paso a buscar directamente en Southwest.

Southwest tiene un programa INREIBLE de rewards y se llama Rapid Rewards. Yo abrí la cuenta tan pronto me mude a Austin y ya he tenido un par de vuelos gratis. No solamente tienen bastantes vuelos a Ft. Lauderdale, que es un lujo total en esta ciudad que tiene un aeropuerto del tamaño de un Polly Pocket, y también tienen muy buenos precios. Entonces, digamos que compre un pasajs round-trip de Austin a Ft Lauderdale y cada trayecto me da alrededor de 700 puntos, en total serian 1,400 puntos. Después de mas o menos cinco viajes ya tienes un pasaje gratis al menos de un trayecto. En un programa regular de tarjetas de crédito, un viaje round-trip cuesta entre 25,000 a 30,000 putos/millas y en Southwest puedes viajar tal vez por 15,000 puntos asi que la diferencia es básicamente la mitad. Con Southwest también se pueden tener mas puntos con el programa de Rapid Rewards Dining, que te da 1 punto por cada dólar que gastes en ciertos restaurants y bares que estén suscritos al programa. El único punto en contra es hay que suscribirse aparte y tienes que poner cada tarjeta de crédito o debito que uses para que te empiece a contar, pero es una cuestión de hacerlo una sola vez.  Después de cada salida a comer o a un bar, te llega un email que es como un cuestionario y por llenarlo también te dan mas puntos. Puede que no parezca mucho pero créanme que van sumando.

Recientemente por fin pude sacar una tarjeta de crédito con programa de millas, la Capital One Venture Card, en otro post les estaré contando como me va y si en realidad vale la pena.

Otra buena estrategia que descubrí comprando este pasaje es comprar 2 pasajes de un trayecto por separado. Esta vez me funciono y supongo que depende de cada caso e particular, pero no esta de mas revisar. Han oído del mito que los pasajes son mas baratos los Martes en la noche? Bueno no es necesariamente verdad, pero de nuevo no esta de más revisar y si te puedes ahorrar un par de dólares aun mejor!

Por ultimo, cuando los vuelos están sobre-vendidos (y pasa casi siempre) las aerolíneas ofrecen vouchers para la gente que quiera quedarse al siguiente vuelo. Si tu horario es flexible, tómalo! A mi personalmente no me sirve porque casi siempre vuelo después del trabajo (tipo 7 pm) y llego antes del trabajo (tipo 10 am). PERO, solo toma el voucher si es de $300 o más, un par de veces he oído de $150 y es muy poquito, igual es dinero gratis para viajar. También cuando un avión esta retrasado por problemas mecánicos SIEMPRE hay que pedir una compensación. La ultima vez Southwest me dio un voucher por $300 así que mi prometido vino hace 2 semanas y  fue básicamente gratis. Pero si no lo pides, no te lo van a dar!
